Everything you need to know about acne

We all know what acne is and how annoying it is! Almost every person has had acne during puberty, which has been expressed to varying degrees but has decreased over the years. However, in some cases, acne can last for decades or even a lifetime. In about 20% of people, acne is severe and leaves lasting physical or mental changes. That is why it is very important to distinguish the types of acne and to take care of our skin according to its needs.

Types of acne according to our age

Our hormones behave differently at different stages of life, which means that acne varies with age. It occurs most often when hormone levels fluctuate and it is  generally categorized into four age groups:

Acne Neonatum, also known as baby acne. It occurs in about 20% of newborns. It is interesting to note that boys are four times more likely to get baby acne than girls.

Acne Infantum, also known as childhood acne, occurs in children between the ages of three and twelve months. Again, it affects boys more often than girls.

Well, that is enough for the acne that we have already experienced and do not even remember. What are the types of acne that plague us now?

Acne Vulgaris is also known as juvenile acne, pubertal acne, and common acne. It occurs during puberty and affects between 70% and 95% of adolescents. It most commonly attacks the face and upper body, and its severity can range from mild acne to moderate and severe acne.

The last type of acne is adult acne. It occurs after the age of 25 and is more common in women than in men, as it is caused by stress and hormonal fluctuations associated with the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, and menopause. It mainly affects the chin and jaw area, neck, and upper body and can vary in severity from mild acne to severe acne.

Acne tends to go away spontaneously over time and even without treatment. However, this fact does not mean that acne does not require treatment.

The goal of treatment is to reduce the duration and severity of acne, reduce the risk of getting lifetime scars, and restore our self-esteem as quickly as possible.

Some forms of acne can last longer and we recommend a professional consultation with a dermatologist!

Acne is a complex disease and there is no way to affect all the factors responsible for its occurrence. People choose different remedies for acne, depending on its severity, as well as the skin type. This is the reason why there is no standard treatment for all acne sufferers.

However, there are some small steps you can take to help your skin recover faster. Here they are:

Clean your face regularly. Most acne sufferers have increased sebum secretion and their skin is more oily in appearance. Detergents and lotions with alcohol, as well as micellar water can be used to cleanse the skin.

Create a ritual for clean skin. Choose the right products for your skin type and start complete care for your face. Take a cleansing product, soothing facial tonic, concealer for direct acne treatment, moisturizing product, and favorite masks. Create your own beauty ritual and turn it into a morning and evening habit.

Use appropriate cosmetics. The usage of products that are not suitable for your skin type can be a sufficient reason for the appearance of cosmetic acne. There are specially developed series of medical cosmetics that are suitable for acne-prone skin. They contain products for both gentle hydration and active treatment. As for makeup, experts recommend the usage of hypoallergenic makeup.
